BBC News viewers were left in stitches after a host made a massive blunder live on air.

In a recent showing, it was news anchor Annabel Tiffin who was joined alongside weather presenter Kawser Quamer on the red couch.

Shortly after presenting the weather, Quamer was called over to the BBC sofa to have a casual chat before the end of the broadcast.

However, moments later, the weather presenter let her secret weekend plans slip.

As the pair sat down for a routine small talk segment, Tiffin asked: “So, what have you got (coming) up at the weekend?

"Anything exciting?"

Quamer - who forgot she was live on air - completely ruined her weekend plans as a result.

“My niece’s surprise birthday party,” Quamer replied, without realising that she had just revealed the surprise.

Her fellow presenter awkwardly responded: “Oh that’s lovely.

“But not a surprise if she’s watching this.”

“Oh goodness me, I’ve spoiled the surprise,” the weather presenter replied as she burst out laughing.

It seems that her colleagues also found the funny side, as BBC North West presenter Steve Saul commented 'Oh dear' on X (Twitter) while BBC News’ creative director Chris Cook wrote: “This is DELIGHTFUL – have a great weekend all xxxx.”

BBC South West journalist Alastair Monk added: “This is just brilliant.

"In a time of so much stress, just enjoy.”

Viewers of the programme were also left in stitches, as one person wrote: "I’ve watched this multiple times now. It gets funnier every time."

A second said: “This is why I watch the regional news.”

BBC

This comes after arguably one of the BBC's best ever news bloopers last December when Chief Presenter Maryam Moshiri flashed her middle finger just before transitioning into a news bulletin.

Moshiri was featuring on the world feed of BBC News at 12 noon (UK time) on 6 December - and the stunned look on her face said it all.

Soon after the programme's famous musical countdown ended, Moshiri throws up the finger while looking straight down the camera lens, taking her a good few seconds to realise she was live on air.

The growling look on her face soon disappeared and she snatched her hand away to avoid further damage.

Maryam Moshiri said she was 'joking around with the team in the gallery'.

Moshiri later apologised for the incident, saying she was ‘joking around’ and ‘pretending to count down’.

She wrote on X: “Hey everyone, yesterday just before the top of the hour I was joking around a bit with the team in the gallery.

"I was pretending to count down as the director was counting me down from 10-0.. including the fingers to show the number. So from 10 fingers held up to one.

"When we got to 1 I turned finger around as a joke and did not realise that this would be caught on camera.

"It was a private joke with the team and I’m so sorry it went out on air! It was not my intention for this to happen and I’m sorry if I offended or upset anyone.

“I wasn’t ‘flipping the bird’ at viewers or even a person really.

"It was a silly joke that was meant for a small number of my mates."
