Have you ever noticed condensation on your windows when you wake up? Well, Brits have found a simple solution to the problem - and it costs less than a tenner.

According to the official UK government website, damp and mould within the home can 'produce allergens, irritants, mould spores, and other toxins that are harmful to health'. Even if mould is not present on the window sills, 'dampness alone can increase the risk of health problems'.

To combat the issue, people are stocking up on a budget dehumidifier before winter and now they ‘can’t be without it’. After struggling with black mould on the window sills, one social media user decided to give the homeware gadget a go and was 'shocked' at the results.

In a TikTok video, she said there has not been 'any horrible condensation or black mould' since using the product as the dehumidifier has collected an 'insane' amount of water. Now, she's planning to buy more of the dehumidifiers for the wardrobes too.

The product in question has received thousands of rave reviews on Amazon with shoppers praising its effectiveness. One five-star review reads, "I always keep one of these in each cupboard and wardrobe and I'm shocked at how much moisture it sucks out. I definitely feel that the mould has been reduced considerably since I have been using these, so I would never be without them now."

Another agreed, saying they've purchased a grand total of 40 dehumidifiers so far: "Our 1930s house has suffered with awful condensation over winter. I saw these on Amazon and thought I would give them a try. I bought eight and placed them where the damp wallpaper was. Within four weeks, the majority had accumulated about one inch of water! The walls are a lot drier! I was so impressed I bought another 40 to last a couple of years."

A third satisfied customer wrote, "This is the only brand that works, I've tried several from other online retailers. It keeps the moisture at bay and it's been great waking up to clean air and no more condensation in the windows."

What causes condensation on windows?

Have you ever wondered why your windows are all fogged up when you draw back the curtains? Well, there’s a bit of science behind it.

Condensation occurs when the air inside your home is warmer than the air outside. When the warm air comes into contact with cold glass, it causes condensation (water) on the window. It’s more common in winter due to the fall in temperature outside.

Condensation is a common cause of damp which can lead to mould if left untreated - posing a serious health risk. According to gov.uk, people with pre-existing health conditions such as COPD, asthma, and cystic fibrosis are significantly at risk. Mould and damp conditions can also affect those with mental health conditions.

How do I prevent condensation on my windows in winter?

To prevent the buildup of condensation on your windows, it’s recommended that you keep the house well ventilated. That means regularly opening windows or vents when possible. You can also wipe condensation from the windows in the morning to prevent mould.

Your best bet? A dehumidifier. They’re designed to absorb any moisture from the air, which in turn will prevent dampness and mould.

Where to buy dehumidifier to prevent condensation and mould

The budget dehumidifier everyone is talking about is available to buy on Amazon. The Straame Interior Dehumidifier is filled with hydrophilic crystals that will absorb moisture from the air, reducing the risk of condensation and mould.

They can be used in any room and are small enough to keep on the windowsill. All you need to do is remove the lid, peel off the cover, and replace the lid to use it. The budget dehumidifiers can last between four to six weeks and multiple can be placed in one room if necessary.

A pack of four Straame Interior Dehumidifiers is available to buy on Amazon for £7.49 whilst a pack of 10 comes in at just £11.95. But make sure to hurry, over one thousand sold in the last month alone.
