Four people sent to hospital after fairground ride collapses ‘sending people flying’ in London

Four people sent to hospital after fairground ride collapses ‘sending people flying’ in London

The ride malfunctioned at the Lambeth County Show

Four people were injured and sent to hospital after a fairground ride collapsed at the Lambeth Country Show yesterday (8 June).

The collapse occurred at about 6:20pm in Brockwell Park after a ride malfunctioned, leaving four injured and in need of hospital treatment.

An 11-year-old girl, a man and woman in their 40s and a man in his 50s were all taken to hospital as a result, none of their injuries are thought to be life threatening.

An inquiry has begun into how the ride malfunctioned.

A spokesperson for the council said yesterday: "Unfortunately, a serious incident occurred today at the Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park involving a malfunction on one of the funfair rides.

"The incident was reported at around 6.20pm today and emergency services were quickly on the scene to treat four people who were injured.

"Paramedics and on-site teams cordoned off the area and those who were injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment."

Emergency services had been called to the scene, which had been descried as 'like a horror movie' with people sent 'flying through the air'.

Some people who'd been at the event told the Daily Mail people were 'crying and screaming' as a result, and one person said they saw 'a lady with blood streaming down her face' who was carried off the malfunctioning ride by paramedics.

They described the emergency services putting up fences and sheets to protect the privacy of those they were helping.

They also claimed that someone else had told them a person had 'come off the ride', but admitted they weren't sure about that as they hadn't seen it themselves.

Another fairground visitor said that 'all hell broke loose' as a result of the ride malfunctioning.

"I’m shocked to learn of the failure of a fairground ride at Lambeth Country Show earlier this evening," said Helen Hayes, the Labour candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood who has been MP for the area for the past nine years.

“My thoughts are with those who were injured and all who witnessed this horrific event.

“Thank you to the emergency services who attended. There must now be an urgent investigation.”

An inquest will now look into how the ride failed and what exactly happened at Lambeth Country Fair to sent four people to the hospital.

Extra safety checks on all of the other rides were carried out following the incident.
