Man arrested in connection with death of Gogglebox star George Gilbey

Gogglebox regular George Gilbey died at the age of 40.

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of Gogglebox star George Gilbey.

Essex Police said that a man in his 40s has been arrested after Gilbey died in a workplace accident.

An Essex Police spokesperson told the PA news agency: "As part of our ongoing investigation into the death of a man in Campfield Road, Shoebury, we have arrested a man in their 40s from the Witham area on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

“This is a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive and our inquiries are ongoing.”

The Gogglebox regular passed away at the age of 40, Channel 4 said in a statement last night (27 March)

A spokesperson for the Channel 4 show said: “George was part of the Gogglebox family for eight series alongside his mum Linda and stepdad Pete.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda and George’s family and friends at this very sad time.

"The family have asked for privacy.”

According to a police statement, a man had died after 'falling from a height' at work on Wednesday (27 March).

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am this morning (March 27), during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury.

“The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance. Sadly, the man died at the scene.

“We will continue liaising with partners including the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

“A cordon remains in place at the scene.”

Former Geordie Shore star Ricci Guarnaccio - who appeared alongside Gilbey in Celebrity Big Brother in 2014 - also paid tribute to his former co-star on X.

"Breaks my (heart) but @georgegilbey you are well and truely (sic) going to be missed my friend," he wrote.

"Always lit up the room, cared for others & the memories we made I’ll cherish for ever brother.

"From CBB to speaking to you last week, I’m going to hugely miss you ma boiii! Love you G."

Fellow finalist Dee Kelly said she is 'so heart broken' by the news.

"I've left it til now to post because i just cant get my head around it x my gawjus george, my friend @georgegilbey x," she tweeted.

"I'm gonna miss you, miss our chats, miss our messages x my love and prayers go out to lynne and family and his beautiful little girl."

YouTuber James Beardwell also wrote: "I can’t believe I heard the news! George is a great guy that I ever met in Witham.

"I finally very first met George at the Burger Junkie in Witham years ago.

"I would like to wish George’s family and friends my huge sympathy and condolences at this sad time. RIP George Gilbey."

The 40-year-old's death comes three years after the death of his step-dad, Pete McGarry, who suffered with bowel cancer.
