Brit family's desperate plea after man, 24, 'paralysed from neck down' jumping into pool on last night of holiday

The family of a man who broke his neck while on holiday in Turkey have issued an appeal for support over concerns of mounting medical bills.

Will Ponter was on holiday in Antalya with his partner Becky Francey when he suffered a devastating injury after a dive into the hotel swimming pool went horribly wrong.

The 24-year-old suffered a broken neck from the incident and is now expected to be paralysed from the neck down.

He remains in intensive care with Becky and his family by his side, with the family revealing their uncertainty for the future.

"We need to get him home," Becky told the BBC, adding that the family are still waiting to find out when her partner will be considered stable enough to travel home. "He's going to need special care. It's going to be a long road to recovery."

"In a second everything just changed."

Becky revealed that she and Will were enjoying their final day in Turkey when he decided to dive into the swimming pool.

However, when Will didn't immediately surface, Becky realised something was wrong, telling the outlet: "He didn't come back up for a while, and when he did, he was just floating face down.

"I knew he wasn't messing, so I dived in, and I pulled him out and he instantly said 'I can't move'."

Will was rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to a more specialised one, after being told his injuries were 'too severe' to operate on.

He later underwent a 13-hour operation, costing 4,000€, and is now recovering.

"The surgery went extremely well," Becky said.

"They said that if he was any older they wouldn't have tried it, it was very risky surgery, but it went really well and he's breathing on his own now."

She added that the family haven't been able to spend longer than 15 minutes with Will, noting that he has a long way to go in recovery.

With the couple's insurance not covering all of Will's medical bills, the family are now expecting mounting medical bills, which are expected to be in the hundreds of thousands.

The family are now fundraising to cover the costs, which could be at least £120,000.

"The immediate, urgent need is help with funds for his stay in the ICU. After that, there is the cost of a flight from Turkey back home to England," read a GoFundMe established by Becky's future stepmother.

"They do not have the correct insurance to cover all costs, and we expect there will be further costs to help make the home accessible, as well as resources and other accessibility equipment.

"We do know that the transport, due to needing medical staff on board, will be roughly £120,000 and every day spent in the ICU in Turkey is costing £2,000," she wrote. "We hope to raise at least £150,000."

Sharing her gratitude for the support shown to the family, Becky added: "We just take it hour by hour, it's the only way to survive, but the kindness that has come out of all this has been incredible.

"The amount of support from home has really lifted us, it feels like a big hug from around the world."
