Sir Alex Ferguson's wife, Cathy, has died aged 84.

The tragic news was confirmed by her family in a statement released to the PA news agency today (6 October).

In their statement, the Fergusons asked for privacy during this difficult time.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild,” it read.

Since news of her passing was announced earlier today, people have taken to social media to share their condolences with Sir Alex and the rest of the family.

Wayne Barton, who has written a number of books about Manchester United figures, said: "Rest in peace Cathy Ferguson.

"Such an incredible support to Sir Alex and, indeed, a key figure in @ManUtd history when it came to the retirement U-turn in 2002. Incredibly sad news."

Another commented: "Rest in peace, Lady Cathy Ferguson.

"Our thoughts are with Sir Alex, their sons and their family at this difficult time."

"RIP Lady Cathy Ferguson and Stay strong Sir Alex Ferguson," put a third.

"We are all with you."

Man United also released a statement following the sad news.

“Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy," a spokesperson for the club said.

“Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.”

Cathy and the former Manchester United manager had been married since 1966, having met while they were both working at a typewriter factory.

During an interview for his 2021 documentary Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give, Cathy revealed Sir Alex had taken her to the cinema for their first date.

“He bought me a box of Liquorice Allsorts at the movies, of which he ate all of them, and a local paper when we came out," she said. "That was my romantic day.

“We got married in Glasgow registry office in 1966 and that was the start. I went to my work and he went to his football.”

When he announced his retirement as United manager in 2013, following a prolonged period of success for the Red Devils, Ferguson praised his wife for the love and support she had shown him over the years.

He said: “My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement.

"Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me."
