Two men, both 25, die after collapsing during Great North Run half-marathon

Two runners have died after taking part in the Great North Run, the organisers of the race have said.

Both men, aged 25, collapsed on the 13.1-mile route on Sunday (13 September).

The event organisers said the runners from the North East of England died despite the ‘very best efforts’ of medical teams.

“Everyone involved in organising the Great North Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the two participants,” the Great Run Company said.

“We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them.”

The cause of death has yet to be ascertained.

Some 63,000 runners took part in the 45th staging of the Newcastle to South Shields run.

Andy Burnham became the first sitting prime minister to take part.
