Entire UK town forced to evacuate as Storm Babet sparks rare red warning

Residents have been told to leave their homes

An entire UK town has been forced to evacuate ahead of the arrival of Storm Babet.

A rare red weather warning was issued for parts of the UK earlier this week, with a 'risk to life' for parts of Scotland.

Storm Babet is set to batter areas of the UK today, as the nation braces for heavy wind and rain.

The Met Office has issued a four-day warning for most of the country, explaining that there is a small chance that communities in the most badly affected areas could be 'completely cut off, perhaps for several days'.

And now, all residents in a Scottish town have had to leave their homes.

Those living in Brechin, in Angus, have been told to evacuate due to flooding.

Angus Council are set to go door-to-door, with approximately 360 properties set to be evacuated.

The council wrote on their site: "We are advised by the Met Office and SEPA that Storm Babet will bring very challenging conditions for Angus, particularly North Angus, with river levels already high and unprecedented levels of rainfall expected. This is the first red rain warning since 2015, accompanied by an amber warning for wind from the east."

A red warning for parts of the east of Scotland, including Brechin, Forfar and Kirriemuir is in force from 6pm today through to midday on Friday.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “Eastern parts of Scotland will see exceptional amounts of rainfall over the next few days and the significant accumulations are likely to cause considerable impacts from Storm Babet.

“Numerous Amber and Yellow rainfall warnings are in place for rainfall over the coming days, up-to and including Saturday, but in the red-warning area 100-150mm of rain is expected to fall quite widely, with some locations possibly seeing 200-220mm, which is expected to cause considerable impacts with flooding likely.”

Babet began to cross over Britain yesterday morning and is set to stay until the weekend, so it's bad news if you were hoping for a wholesome autumnal walk this Saturday.

The Met Office has issued a four-day warning for most of the country, explaining that there is a small chance that communities in the most badly affected areas could be 'completely cut off, perhaps for several days'.

At 6am on Saturday, the yellow weather warning for rain across eastern England and southern Scotland is expected to be lifted as Babet continues moving towards Eastern Europe.

So if you're stepping out these next few days, you're probably going to want a brolly and a coat at the least. Or you know, just stay inside where it's dry.

Keep an eye on the weather alerts for your local area and stay safe out there lads.
