One of Britain's oldest identical twins has died after contracting coronavirus.

Doris Hobday and her twin Lilian Cox - also known as the Tipton Twins - were being treated in hospital after testing positive for Covid earlier this month.

Mrs Hobday's family said she died on 5 January, saying they were 'totally heartbroken' to have lost Doris.

Since then, Mrs Cox has been discharged and is recovering.

In a statement, the family said: "We are so grateful for all the special memories we have created and got to share with you all."

Piers Morgan was among those to pay tribute to the twins.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "RIP Doris Hobday, 96. One of Britain's two oldest twins & a delightful lady. She died from coronavirus. Her sister Lil got covid too but survived and is now home from hospital. My deepest condolences to her on the loss of her beloved sister."

The pair won the hearts of the nation after giving a cheeky interview on Good Morning Britain in May last year.

The hilarious pair won the hearts of hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid as well as viewers during the segment in which they joked that the secret to a long life was 'plenty of sex' and Lil revealed a not-so-secret crush on Jason Statham.

When Piers asked: "I heard I have a love rival - you're rather hot on him?"

Lil responded: "One night with him and I'll die happy!"

Susanne Reid could be heard howling with laughter with the cheeky response as the two women burst out into fits of giggles.

The twins took part from lockdown in the West Midlands where they are staying in their daughter's house after being moved out of their care home.
