Ricky Gervais says he's scared that he will be wheelchair-bound after suffering with back problems for three decades.

The 60-year-old has revealed that he was left in excruciating pain after trying to tie his shoelaces while out running recently.

It was so severe that his partner Jane Fallon even had to help dress him.

Speaking to The Sun, Ricky said he's concerned about what he'll be like in a few years' time.

He told the publication: "This is why I know I'll end up in a f***ing bucket one day.

"I've got tennis tomorrow, that's got to be cancelled. Thank god I haven't got a gig.

"Next tour, after this one, I'm changing the genre. It's not stand-up, it's sit-down."

The writer also explained how he was left bedridden following a game of tennis in Italy.

He told the paper that Jane had to care for him again, keeping him 'hydrated' with bottles of Budweiser, which he then used to relieve himself in because he was unable to make it to the bathroom.

Ricky said: "It's probably happened ten times significantly in 30 years, usually when I'm putting a toothbrush back or doing up a f***ing shoelace.

"It's horrible. You forget how much you rely on your spine."

Despite his ongoing health troubles, though, Ricky hasn't let it get in the way of his work.

He is currently editing series three of After Life, which he says is the 'best' thing he's ever made.

"I'm 99 percent confident it will be the end. When you see it I think you'll agree," he said.

"It's the best thing I've done. I've pulled out all the stops."

But while his latest creation has proved to be a monumental hit with fans the world over, Ricky recently said that his breakout series, The Office, wouldn't get made today.

"I mean, now it would be cancelled," he told the BBC.

"I'm looking forward to when they pick out one thing and try to cancel it.

"Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I say, 'Good, let them cancel it. I've been paid!'"
