TikTok users discover way to read redacted text in the Epstein Files

The long awaited release of the Epstein files has not been a smooth one

TikTok users have discovered that it's possible to read some of the redacted text in the Epstein files.

After months of pressure, the US Justice Department finally released the files it has relating to investigations into the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The files are now publicly available for anyone to search through and download, with images released including several high-profile figures such as Bill Clinton, President Donald Trump and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, as well as numerous celebrities.

Being pictured in the photographs does not suggest any wrongdoing or knowledge of Epstein's criminal activities.

There has also been some furore over a photo of Epstein and the US president disappearing and then reappearing in the files, leading to allegations of a 'cover up' online.

And the headache isn't over for the Department of Justice either, as multiple people have revealed that it's possible to read some of the redactions in the documents.

Reports of issues with the redactions began to swirl after TikTok user @evangeleeeen shared a video showing herself successfully copying text from pages with redactions and pasting it onto a word document.

The post refers to section 85 of a document regarding a civil case involving Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn, executors of Epstein’s estate, with the user able to read several redacted sentences after a simple copy and paste.

"I'm literally a hacker," she jokes in the shocking clip.

"If this happened because DOGE cancelled agencies’ Adobe licenses earlier this year so they can no longer use the redaction tool I will never stop laughing," commented one person under the clip, while a second wrote: "As a paralegal who redacts documents daily, this such a rookie move and I’m so happy I finally can have some say in this situation."

"The second you started highlighting it I audibly said 'bro there’s no way'," added a third person.

The TikToker isn't the only person who's been able to view certain portions of redacted information this way, with numerous users on X, TikTok and Reddit also confirming that they've been able to do the same.

An article from The Guardian also noted that some people have been able to bypass redactions through the use of Photoshop.

While it appears that only a certain portion of the documents were redacted in this manner, concerns have been raised about the potential implications of users being able to bypass redactions.

Why are there redactions in the Epstein files?

Legal redactions can be made for a multitude of reasons, including the protection of victim identities, sensitive information and details which could jeopardise upcoming legal cases.
