At least two people killed and several injured including two police officers after shooting in Minneapolis

At least two people have died and several others have been left injured, including two police officers, after a shooting in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis police received a call on Wednesday (2 September) evening to reports of gunfire in downtown Minneapolis.

Upon entering the building, officers 'encountered victims and heard additional gunfire'.

They followed the sound of the gunfire to an upper floor of the building where cops encountered a ‘haze’ that impacted visibility.

Footage shared on social media showed police aiming rifles upward at an apartment tower near the Minneapolis convention centre.

Speaking at a news conference, Minneapolis Police Sergeant Garrett Parten said one of the victims had died at the scene and the other died after being taken to hospital.

Two officers are among those injured, with one sustaining a non-life-threatening injury to the leg and a second undergoing surgery, The Guardian reports.

It’s believed that the suspected shooter, who has not yet been named, is also dead.

"This is a tremendously tragic event, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, the loved ones of those who lost their lives, those who were injured and with the injured officers and their families," Parten added.

Eyewitness Anthony Strong told The Minneapolis Star Tribune that he had been outside the building when he heard gunshots.

“It was pop, pop, pop, pop and it was a bunch more after that, and then I went upstairs,” he said.

Another eyewitness said she had heard ‘probably heard 25 to 30 shots’ throughout the incident.

She told KARE she had been walking downstairs in the building when she heard gunfire and saw that ‘somebody was down’.

She said she 'just left the building immediately, because I knew what was happening, so I didn’t want to be involved in that'.

The woman, who didn't want to be named, said she continued to hear gun shots ring out after she had exited the building.

Minnesota governor Tim Walz said in a statement: “Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon.

“Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison called the incident ‘horrifying’.

“My deepest thoughts are with those killed and hurt, including the police officers injured. I pray for their quick recovery.

“I fully support responding law enforcement and my office will help in all the ways possible.”

Meanwhile, Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth said she that she is 'praying for the victims of this heinous crime'.

She wrote on social media: “I’m incredibly thankful for the massive response of our brave law enforcement officers.”

The FBI has said it assisting following the horrific tragedy.

FBI director Kash Patel wrote on X: “FBI is aware of the shooting in Minneapolis involving law enforcement and our personnel are responding — we will offer any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities.”

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in St. Paul has also said it was responding to the scene.
