Universal boss releases new details after man died on their roller coaster

Kevin Rodriguez Zavala died after becoming unresponsive on the Stardust Racers roller coaster on 17 September

The Universal roller coaster on which a 32-year-old man died from 'blunt impact injuries' had 'functioned as intended', according to Universal Orlando's president Karen Irwin.

Kevin Rodriguez Zavala became unresponsive while riding the Stardust Racers ride at Universal's Epic Universe on 17 September, before he was taken to hospital and sadly pronounced dead.

Since then, resort boss Irwin has confirmed in internal messages to team members that 'the ride systems functioned as intended, equipment was intact at the ride's start, throughout the duration of the ride and upon the ride vehicle’s return to the station, and our Team Members followed procedures', according to reports.

The COO, who has been at the company for 35 years, told staffers that 'few moments have been as difficult as this one', while praising them for their 'resilience, compassion and professionalism', during throughout the tragic incident.

"The attraction remains closed as we continue to work through a comprehensive review process in cooperation with the ride manufacturer of record," she said.

"Safety is, and always will be, at the forefront of everything we do."

Irwin concluded: "Thank you for living our values and the commitment you bring to our Guests and each other, especially in moments like this. Together we will continue to move forward with compassion, care and professionalism."

The Orange County Medical Examiner previously said Zavala died from 'multiple blunt impact injuries', however they did not confirm where on the body the injuries were or how they are believed to have occurred. His death has been ruled as an accident.

The 32-year-old's family have paid tribute to him, describing him as 'one of a kind', and 'wise beyond his years'.

Despite relying on a wheelchair, his family say he faced all obstacles with 'unwavering spirit'.

"He was the kind of person who always made time to listen, offer thoughtful advice, and lift others up, even when he was facing challenges of his own," his sister, Ana Zavala, wrote on a GoFundMe page raising money for the unexpected funeral expenses.

"Despite the restrictions and obstacles he encountered throughout his life, Kevin met them all with grace, strength, and an unwavering spirit. He overcame so much, and he did so with quiet resilience and humility."

A spokesperson for Universal previously said they were 'devastated' by Zavala's death and said they were 'fully committed to cooperating with this ongoing investigation'.

Epic Universe, where the incident took place, opened its doors to visitors in May of this year.
