Man’s Wayne Rooney Halloween costume is being called the ‘best ever’

A lad’s Wayne Rooney Halloween costume has been hailed the ‘best ever’ after he recreated one of the footballer’s most iconic looks – having even attracted the praise of the former England star.
Many of us are as fascinated by footballers’ antics off the pitch as we are by their athleticism, with their lavish lifestyles often shared with the world through social media and paparazzi shots.
And arguably it doesn’t get more glamorous than Wayne Rooney’s 2003 holiday to Spain, when he was photographed strolling down the street with wife Colleen, licking an inexplicably large lollipop in a navy blue tank top and sliders.
Oh, how the other half live.
So historic is this image that it not only lives rent-free in my head, it has now also become the inspiration for one bloke’s incredible Halloween costume this year.
Alex Williamson, 27, decided to channel Rooney in holiday mode for the perfect ‘Hallowooney’ look, and shared the results on social media – racking up more than 15,000 likes in the process.
Speaking to LADbible, Alex said: “Rooney was an icon of mine on the pitch and then off the pitch with his fashion.
“Ever since I saw the famous picture of him and the United squad out in town in their bootcut clobber, I’ve been an avid fan.”
The sales manager from Manchester trawled through second-hand clothes site Depop to find the perfect tank top to complete his look, which also involved a bit of crafting.
“The vest was the hardest thing to locate, until I found a T-shirt on Depop and did some DIY,” he said.
“I spent the evening watching Rooney’s first 100 PL goals before heading to my mate's for a house party.”
When he arrived, many of his friends agreed he had nailed the look.
“The reaction I got from my mates at the party was that I’d smashed it,” Alex said.
“I thought I’d get some replies on social media but not for it to take off like it has. I’m getting a notification per second!
“Any acknowledgement from Wayne would be great and anyone who wants to be my Colleen next year, message me.”
And believe it or not, after we spoke to Alex, the photo eventually made its way to an impressed Wayne Rooney.
“Good effort,” he wrote, adding a crying-with-laughter and thumbs up emoji.
Many others echoed Rooney's response, with one Twitter user commenting: "Best costume I’ve seen."
Someone else said: "That’s class."
A third added: "Best ever."
Well, I think we can all agree Alex has won Halloween this year. Fair play.
