Would you serve a six-legged half-insect/half-rabbit cake at your kid's birthday party?

As far as staples of every British kids party of all time go, a Colin the Caterpillar cake is almost as important at the get-together as the presents.

You know the one, it's a long sponge cake coated in chocolate with an endearing and friendly smile across his face.

Well, that's at least how things used to be.

As Easter approaches - which, actually, is ages away - Marks & Spencer decided it would give the classic Colin cake a makeover, and it's actually pretty damn disturbing.

Here's the new one. What do you reckon?

The supermarket chain kept much of it the same - it's still a sponge cake covered in chocolate. However, the changes it has made really do make a difference.

First off, he's got white chocolate rabbit ears. Secondly, they've stuck a load of mini orange carrots on his back. They've definitely doubled down on their 'Easter Bunny' theme.

Anyway, the result is that Colin looks pretty creepy. Remember Frank, the strange metallic masked rabbit character from Donnie Darko? Yeah, it's a bit like that.

Oh, and because it is a caterpillar cake, it still has six legs. Would you buy your children a six-legged half-insect/half-rabbit creature cake for their birthday party?

No, didn't think so.

People think the M&S cake looks like the demonic Frank from Donnie Darko.

When the cake was shared in Facebook's Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, some reacted with shock and horror.

One said: "Most disturbing looking bunny I've ever seen!"

Another wrote: "Looks like the bunny from Donnie Darko. They should save it for Halloween, it looks demonic."

A third said: "Is it just me or does that rabbit look evil? Kinda crazy? I think that cake would scare children and the elderly!"

Obviously, not everyone thinks this.

One supporter of the Easter-themed cake said: "Looks good and tastes good too."

M&S described the cake as 'seriously cute' in its official magazine, You. It went on: "Marks & Spencer's Colin the Caterpillar cake is nothing short of a national icon, and these days, it's not just for birthdays.

"After the success of the Christmas Colin, which had sweet-toothed fans across the country scouring the shops, there's now an Easter Bunny Colin the Caterpillar cake coming to a store near you.

Remember classic Colin?
Marks & Spencer

"The new design is the perfect seasonal upgrade to the classic Colin, with the same milk chocolate-smothered sponge updated with mini carrot decorations, egg sprinkles and an equally adorable Easter bunny face.

"It's available in stores from 31 March, giving you plenty of time to sample its delights before Easter Sunday (which falls on 12 April this year, if it's not already blocked out in your diary)."

If you want one, they'll cost £10.
