Police in Colorado have arrested a man with a white beard who robbed a bank, then proceeded to throw the newly stolen money into the air shouting "Merry Christmas!".

Witnesses claim to have seen the man - thought to be a 65-year-old man called David Wayne Oliver - waiting to be arrested outside a Starbucks coffee shop after his bizarre crime.

One bystander who watched the whole surreal incident told local media outlet 11 News: "He robbed the bank, came out, threw the money all over the place,

"He started throwing money out of the bag and then said, 'Merry Christmas!'"

Even more strange than that, it has also been reported that the passers-by then picked up the money and walked straight back to the bank to return it.

Colorado Springs police have confirmed that a 65-year-old man had been arrested and taken to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center following the bank robbery.

According to the police reports, an "older white male" threatened bank staff with the use of a weapon before leaving the bank with an undisclosed load of cash in a bag at around lunchtime this past Monday.

When the police finally arrived, they found the man sitting outside the Starbucks coffee shop, seemingly waiting about for the police to get there.

Once they did, he was taken into custody.

It has not been proven that Oliver shouted the festive greeting to the bystanders, but it has been widely reported by eyewitnesses.

As for the rest of the money, some of it was immediately returned to the Academy Bank on South Tejon Street, but thousands of dollars are still missing.

A manager at the Starbucks outlet told Denver Post that, once the crime had been committed, Oliver sat on the patio outside the shop, but didn't order a drink, and little attention was paid to him by anyone else nearby.

On the police blotter, the incident was detailed as follows: "On Monday, December 23, 2019, at 12:27pm, a bank was robbed near the intersection of East Pikes Peak Avenue and South Tejon Street.

"An older white male threatened the use of a weapon and left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

"The suspect was found sitting in front of a nearby coffee shop and was taken into custody without incident by responding patrol officers.

"Detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department Robbery Unit responded and assisted with the investigation."
