The Mayan elders predicted the world to end on 21 December 2012... now they've said they were off by eight years

An evangelical Christian pastor has claimed the Mayan elders were eight years off when they predicted the end of the world would happen on 21 December 2012 - turns out it will occur on 21 December 2020 instead. Seems a fitting end to the year, doesn't it?

Pastor Paul Begley, who spoke of the news on his YouTube channel, added that 21 December also happens to be his birthday. Unlucky for some.

According to Begley, who hails from Indiana, the spiritual leaders have made a few predictions that haven't ended up amounting to anything. Among these failed predictions was the recent date of 21 June, when it was expected that a solar eclipse would mark doomsday.

Considering you're telling people the world is ending, you probably don't want to get it wrong.

On one of his YouTube videos, Begley explained: "Of course, the Mayan elders said this could have been the end of the world today [21 June]. They might have made a mistake.

"Well, they obviously made a mistake on December 21, 2012, so they said maybe today would be the end of the world.

"And they made a prediction if this wasn't the end of the world today, certainly my birthday will come again.

"December 21, 2020, during the great conjunction when Jupiter and Saturn come within 0.1 degrees of one another and create the brightest star in the skies since the star of Bethlehem.

"So this is so rare and it's going to be on the winter solstice. It's going to be on December 21, 2020. The Mayans are now reorganising and saying this could certainly be the end of the world as we know it."

He added: "Some of the Mayan elders, who were so big on the end of the world on December 21, my birthday, in the year 2012, they missed it. They're now saying that they were eight years off and that this Sunday [21 June] could be the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar.

"But if it's not then it's definitely going to be on my birthday, December 21 2020, during the great conjunction.

"You got two shots at the apocalypse according to the Mayan calendar again. WHAT?"

WHAT indeed.
