Most horrifying last words from crew before harrowing plane crashes - ‘This is it, baby!’

Since the harrowing events of 9/11, when the world watched aircraft slam into tall tower blocks - bringing them down in a ball of flame and ash - the way we see air travel has changed forever.

In addition to the horrific images, the catastrophic terrorist attack against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon left behind some of the most harrowing audio recordings in recent human history.

Most famously horrifying was from United Flight 93, where passengers are believed to have fought back against hijackers, who it is believed, probably intended to fly the plane into the White House.

Once they realised there was little they could do against the heroic passenger revolt, so they decided to deliberately crash the craft into the ground. Some of the terrorists’ final words were “Down. Push, push, push, push, push.”

Despite the terrifying nature of aviation disasters – or perhaps because of this – aircraft black boxes designed to withstand destruction are installed to provide an unbiased witness to the final moments of the crew.

Those that have met tragic ends have left final transcripts that show the full range of human emotion – from hyper-focussed professionalism to confusion and stoic resignation.

Here we round up some of the most sobering we can all learn from if the worst were to happen.

Desperate fight for control

In 1985, Japan Airlines flight 123 flew from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport with 524 passengers on board. The Boeing 747 suffered a loss of hydraulic controls leading to a loss of steering. Despite the nearly impossible odds the crew valiantly managed to steer the aircraft for 32 minutes using engine thrust before the plane stalled and crashed into Mount Takamagahara. Total fatalities were 520, making this the deadliest aircraft disaster in history by a single plane. The last words of Captain Takahama were: “It’s the end.”

Alaska Airlines Flight 261 left Lic. Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport in 2000, heading for Seattle. The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 did not have enough grease for the plane’s jackscrew mechanism, forcing it to shear off, sending the aircraft into a nosedive. The pilot attempted an incredible variety of manoeuvres to save the craft, however they were just 2.7 miles short of California when they lost altitude, killing all 88 on board. The final words of Captain Thompson were: “Ah, here we go.”

Panic and Confusion

Air France flight 447 took off from Galeão International Airport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the way to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris in 2009. However, ice crystals had caused the autopilot to fail over the Atlantic at night. The junior pilot pulled back on the stick control, stalling the plane for three minutes before it hit the ocean. The transcript of the final exchange reveals the confusion with one crew member uttering a swear word, then: “We’re going to crash”, then “This can’t be true.” And someone adds: “But what’s happening?” Before the captain said, “Ten degrees pitch attitude.”

Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 182 had one of the most memorable final words. It was travelling from Sacramento International Airport to San Diego International Airport, with 135 people on board. Of those more than 30 were off-duty airline crew. The Boeing 727 hit a light Cessna 172 with two people inside, crashing into a residential part of San Diego, killing an additional 7 people. The final words recorded by the black box from Captain Jim McFeron were: “This is it, baby!” An unidentified person added, “Ma, I love you.”

Final goodbyes

Polish Airlines Flight 5055 was on its way from Warsaw Chopin Airport to New York’s JFK, when an engine exploded mid-flight, starting a huge fire in the rear cargo hold of the Ilyushin Il-62M. Despite the severity of the blaze, the pilot heroically steered his plane away from built up areas. When the final moment came, pilot Zygmunt Pawlaczyk uttered his chilling final words: “Goodnight, goodbye, we’re dying!”

In 1970, Swissair Flight 330 on the way to Tel Aviv with 47 people on board was struck by a terrorist attack. A bomb inside a mail package exploded, filling the cockpit with smoke. The crew were blinded and began to be suffocated as they struggled with their damaged instruments to return to Zurich. They were not successful and the final words before all aboard died were; “Goodbye everybody.”
