A 13-year-old girl has died after eating a 'poisoned Easter egg' that also killed her brother.

Luís Fernando, a seven-year-old boy, became 'severely ill' after eating the chocolate treat last Wednesday (16 April) and was given CPR by his father Rafael Silva before being rushed to hospital, where he died a few hours later.

While at hospital in Brazil, the boy's mother Mirian Lira and his sister, Evelyn Silva, started feeling ill and displaying symptoms of alleged poisoning such as struggling to breathe and their hands going purple and were also hospitalised.

The 13-year-old Evelyn has since died, with the Metro reporting that she died on Monday (21 April) due to vascular shock caused by multiple organ failure.

Both children and their parents had eaten part of an easter egg which had been delivered to their home that had come with the message: "With love, to Miriam Lira. Happy Easter!!!"

Police have arrested a woman named Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, the ex-partner of Rafael Silva, as she was stepping off a bus that was going from Imperatriz to her home city of Santa Ines after reviewing security footage from a shop where she appeared to buy the easter egg while wearing a wig.

Officers also seized two wigs, some chocolate, medicine and bus tickets, one of which was bought on 14 April two days before the Easter eggs were delivered.

When questioned by police, Barbosa said she'd bought the eggs in the run up to Easter, however, she said she didn't poison them.

In a statement, police said: "The initial investigations point that jealousy and revenge may have been the motivation for the woman to poison chocolate and send it to her family, given that the investigated is the ex-girlfriend of the current partner of one of the victims.

"The Maranhão Civil Police arrived to the investigated after analyzing images from security cameras of Imperatriz's commercial establishment, where the suspect appears, who was wearing a wig, buying chocolate.

"In addition, the arrest was based on testimonies from witnesses and family members indicating the woman as the main suspect of committing the crime."

Pereira is alleged to have travelled to Imperatriz, visited a chocolate shop while wearing a wig in an attempt to disguise her identity and then had the eggs sent to Mirian Lira.

Lira had received a call after they were delivered asking if she had received it, according to Luís' aunt Naiza Santos.

She told Brazilian outlet G1 that the caller was a woman's voice asking Mirian if she'd received the egg, and when they were asked about their identity, they said 'You'll find out who it is' before hanging up.

Mirian Lira remains in hospital in a stable condition.
