Four people have died in Majorca following a building collapse.

The incident has led to at least 21 people being injured, with more feared to have been hurt in the wreckage.

Seven are reported to be in "critical condition", as emergency services continue to work through the night.

The building collapse occurred in the capital of Palma, a hotspot for tourists and British visitors to the Spanish island.

According to local Spanish news outlet Majorca Daily Bulletin (MDB), emergency services were called shortly after 8pm.

Witnesses claim that the incident occurred in a popular restaurant spot, the Medusa Beach Club on C. Cartago, when a terrace at the top of the building collapsed on restaurant-goers.

Jaime Martínez, mayor of Palma, has gone to the scene to speak to emergency services, as well as deputy mayor, Javier Bonet.

It has also been reported that people were trapped at the scene, although it has not been confirmed whether this is still ongoing.

A spokesperson for a regional emergency response coordination centre said: “We have activated an emergency response as a result of the collapse of the ceiling of a two-storey building in Avenida Cartago in Playa de Palma, where people are trapped. Firefighters and local police are at the scene.”

The incident took place on 'Playa de Palma', a popular beach resort in Majorca.

Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Islands, has posted a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter).

She said: "Shocked by the information I received about the collapse of Platja de Palma.

"Sending all my affection and warmth to the families of the four people who lost their lives in this tragic incident and wishing the recovery of all the injured.

"Thanks to all the emergency services that have moved to the scene and continue to work there."

She has also thanked the President of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, for calling and expressing 'interest and support' during the heartbreaking incident.

He posted a statement on X saying:

"I am closely following the consequences of the terrible landslide that occurred on the beach of Palma.

"I have just spoken with the president Marga Prohens, and with the mayor of the city, Jaime Martinez, to whom I have conveyed the willingness of the Government of Spain to collaborate with all the means and personnel that are necessary.

"I want to send my condolences to the families of the deceased and my wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured."
