Located 200 miles south of the capital of Athens, Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and regularly sees hundreds of thousands of Brits travel to the island every summer.
The incident is the latest in a number of tragedies involving British nationals on holiday in Greece this summer, after a 74-year-old man was found deceased on a sun-lounger at a popular beach.
According to a report from The Mirror, the unnamed man was found unconscious by other tourists on Stalis Beach, Crete on 20 July.
Local reports said the man had been swimming before returning to his sun-lounger to relax, where he began to feel a 'strong feeling' of sickness.
Efforts were made by Hellenic National Center of Emergency Care (EKAB) to revive the man, however he was ultimately pronounced dead.
"We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities," a spokesperson for the FCDO said (via MailOnline).

The man was understood to have been on a tourist boat off the coast of the western Greek island and jumped off the ship during a scheduled stop at Ammoudi Beach.
However the man fell unconscious in the water and had to be rescued by other tourists on the vessel. He was given first aid before being taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
