The tribute comes today following a statement from Ronaldo and his wife Georgina Rodriguez, in which they announced the tragic death of his son.

They said: "It is with our deepest sadness that we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away.

"It is the greatest pain that any parent can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.

"Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you."

The couple had announced that they were expecting twins in October 2021.

Rodriguez was around three months pregnant at the time, with her due date thought to be in the spring of 2022.

It is believed that Rodriguez gave birth to the twins, one of which was a daughter, who survived, and a son, who sadly passed away.

The pair have been together since 2016 and were engaged in 2020.

Ronaldo is father to four children, twins Eva Maria and Mateo, eldest son Cristiano Jr. and youngest Alana Martina.

Ronaldo's club also publicly commented following the news, sharing the footballer's statement and adding: "Your pain is our pain, @Cristiano. Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time."

Liverpool, who is playing Ronaldo's club tonight, also tweeted: "All of us here at Liverpool FC send our deepest condolences to you, Georgina and the family."

While nearby Manchester City added: "Everyone at Manchester City sends our deepest condolences to you and Georgina."

Ronaldo's teammates also paid tribute, with Marcus Rashford writing: "Thoughts are with you and Georgina brother I’m so sorry."
