The Qatar World Cup is now over after a breathtaking final match between Argentina and France.

The final whistle saw the score at a 3-3 draw, which forced the game into extra time and then penalties for a nail-biting end to the competition.

The game was a high-octane thriller between the two best sides in the world and football fans were left on the edge of their seats as Argentina took home the top prize.

The final face-off was so spectacular that many fans are now calling it the best ever final in World Cup history.

Football fanatics flooded social media with reports of high blood pressure after the thrilling match.

One social media user said: "I'm going to have a heart attack. This is the greatest World Cup game I've ever seen."

A second added: "I think I speak for everybody when I say this is the best football World Cup ever.

A third commented: "I think this match is giving me an unrealistic expectation of what to expect from all football matches going forward."

Another person had called it before the game was even over: "Whichever team wins, this has been the best World Cup game I’ve ever seen."

Even TV host Piers Morgan waded into the throng to voice his opinion, saying: "Greatest ever World Cup Final in the greatest ever World Cup. Utterly thrilling. What an advert for the beautiful game."

And, look, fans have fair reason to be singing the game's praises right now.

After weeks of tension, heartbreak, goals and songs, Argentina took home the top prize.

While the final score was 3-3, Argentina won 4-2 on penalties.

Lionel Messi could be seen crying tears of joy at the result as the game offered the player, often touted as the best in the world, the chance to take home his first World Cup.

He's secured 791 goals for his club and country, and a record seven Ballon d'Or awards.

So, the World Cup trophy will be the cherry on top of the cake for his career.

Argentina previously won FIFA's event in 1978 and 1986, but lost in 1930, 1990 and 2014.

Following Argentina's win over Croatia in the semi final, Messi revealed the final showdown against France would be the last of his World Cup career.

He told reporters: "There are a lot of years from this year to the next one.

"I don't think I will be able to do that.

"To finish this way is brilliant."

What a way to wrap up a stellar World Cup career.
