Travellers rank the world’s rudest destinations for tourists

Getting the chance to explore new places, tuck into different cuisines and meeting the locals are all major reasons why many of us travel.

However, things can quickly turn sour if you’re having to deal with rude people while you’re trying to enjoy your break.

And some travellers reckon there’s more chance of this happening in certain destinations than others.

According to Jo Hayes, founder of EtiquetteExpert.org, there are some countries and cities that traveller believe stand out when it comes to being rude and standoffish.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, she dished the dirt on the least friendly places you might find.

Paris, France

Hayes told the publication that Paris, France, is ‘top of the list’ when it comes to being rude and unfriendly to tourists.

She pointed out that many locals will be particularly unimpressed if you don’t speak French and claimed that although most Parisians have a solid grasp of English they ‘many refuse to speak English, and appear annoyed that tourists don’t/can’t’.

Hayes went on to say that other regions in France may be a lot friendlier for visitors.

Italy

Next up, Italy.

While millions flock to the country each year to see the sights and tuck into the delicious food, it seems that some people have found the locals to be less than bowled over by tourists.

On Reddit, one tourist said he was left shocked to discover that - unlike us Brits - Italians aren’t keen on a proper queuing system and will happily cut in line.

Meanwhile, on Facebook, another traveler said that those traveling to Rome should ‘expect’ rude behaviour.

“The city is beautiful and packed with art, but the people are some of the worst I have encountered, and I have traveled a lot,” he wrote.

Germany

Germany was ranked third, with some travelers claiming that Germans can come across as rude while interacting.

In a post on Reddit, one tourist said he’d visited four German cities and found that with the exception of one man ‘every other interaction, I mean EVERY, was awful’.

South Korea

South Korea was also rated as one of the rudest places for tourists.

One man who had recently visited the country told the Daily Mail he found many of the locals in Seoul ‘fierce’ and complained of being ‘snapped at’ and ‘barged into’ while out and about exploring what the city had to offer.

New York, USA

The Big Apple is another widely popular tourist spot, but it’s also one of the rudest, according to visitors.

New Yorkers are known for having a tough and no-nonsense attitude and a recent study from Business Insider found that it was considered the rudest city in the US, with 34.3 percent of people saying its locals were rude.

However, over on Reddit one New Yorker explained that he and his fellow residents aren’t rude but are simply ‘not nice’, either.

Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic

Finally, Hayes joined together several European cities - Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary - marking them out as having a long history of being rude to tourists, particularly ones from outside Europe or Eastern Europe.

However, she did note that it's largely due to ‘cultural differences’ and said that the ‘cold’ way they talk to visitors isn’t necessarily seen the same way to those living there.
