CNN Brazil Reporter Mugged On Air At Knifepoint By Homeless Man

A CNN Brazil reporter was mugged at knife in São Paulo live on air by a man who demanded she hand over both of her mobile phones. You can watch the incident as it unfolded below:

Bruna Macedo was in the city with her news crew, stationed near the Bandeiras Bridge in order to report on the rising water level of the Teté River that has been caused by heavy rains.

Macedo was in the middle of her news segment and talking to news anchor Rafael Colombo when a man appeared on the bridge in the background of the shot.

After almost two minutes, the man then appeared beside Macedo while Colombo was talking.

Macedo greeted the man, and then stepped back in visible shock as he pulled out a knife. The presenter handed him one of her two phones. It was then that the camera control center panned away to show an empty section of street.

Off-camera, Macedo handed over a second mobile device before the mugger fled the scene. Colombo later told Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo that Macedo returned to the CNN center after the incident and wasn't injured.

Colombo explained to the paper: "It was impossible to understand what was happening at the time, if it was a homeless person passing by. But after what happened, we cut the image and explained [the phone] was stolen.

"He threatened her and she handed over a cell phone, but he knew she had two, because she has a private and a corporate one.

"She had a terrible scare, but she is fine, she didn't have any kind of injuries."

Macdeo is looking to press charges against her assailant.

Obviously anything can happen on live TV - and it's not the first time a new reporter has been mugged while on air.

In 2015, Vuyo Mvoko - who was working as a contributing editor at South African broadcaster SABC News - was delivering a news segment outside of Johannesburg's Millpark Hospital when he was approached by a group of men.

He could be heard during the broadcast exclaiming "We're being mugged!"

He later told SABC News that, like this instance, they were attempting to steal his mobile phone, which he was holding in his hands. He said one of the aggressors had a gun.

"It was literally seconds before going on air," he said. "Who could possibly disturb me while they know that we're literally seconds before going on air?"
