A young lad managed to save his grandmother's life when she was choking on a scone.

Eight-year-old Billy White ran to help his mother, Kate, when her attempts to save her mother failed.

Billy, who was in another room playing Minecraft at the time, paused his game and rushed into the room where his grandmother was struggling to breathe.

Acting fast, Billy 'thumped' his grandmother on the back and the piece of scone that was lodged in her throat flew from her mouth.

Diane, the 8-year-old's grandmother, praised her grandson for his efforts, and, let's be honest, for pausing Minecraft - most kids these days would have prioritised their game.

She told the Mirror: "I honestly think that if Billy hadn't come in when he did and known exactly what to do, I would have died there and then. I am so grateful to him. The whole of my body started to shake and Kate said 'I'm going to ring an ambulance' and I thought, I'm not going to make it. Then Bill came on the scene and wam, wam, wam, wam - I coughed and dislodged whatever it was. I shook for ages though, it was very frightening but he's a good lad and I'm glad I have him. I'm very proud of him, we're both very proud."

Billy had been attending an after school club called 'Badgers' which was run by St John's Ambulance, where he was taught first aid techniques.

Speaking to the Mirror, Billy said: "Well I hit her five times on the back. I leant her forward and I didn't have to tell her to cough because she was already coughing. I hit her in the shoulder blades but in the middle, I could tell just where to hit, I just knew for some reason and I thumped."

Only three weeks prior to Diane's accident, Billy was taught how to stop someone from choking by leaning them forward and beating their back.

Thankfully, although shaken, Diane walked away from the incident unharmed, before Billy went back to playing Minecraft.

Well done, Billy.
