Mortified groom says one of the worst things possible during wedding vows without even realising

Andrew Fildes' mistake was something out of a sitcom storyline

There are only a few ways you can mess up during your wedding vows, and one groom seemed to pluck the biggest one for his special day.

Imagine getting married to the love of your life and suddenly, you only go and c**k up by uttering words that nobody wants to hear during your nuptials.

Well, unlike me and you, one bloke will have to live with this forever (if his missus doesn’t let him forget it).

The mortified groom left his bride-to-be and guests covering their faces after attending a registry office in Bedfordshire in October 2023.

Andrew Fildes, 51, and Rebecca Fildes, 46, had been together for six years prior to saying ‘I do’.

While it’s a long time, weddings are notoriously nerve wracking, leading to some to mess up when repeating the vows. For Andrew, he was 'sweating' and 'shaking' at the altar when his 'worst nightmare' happened.

Can you give it a guess? I’ll even hint at it.

Friends: Ross at the alter with Emily when Rachel is in attendance.

Bingo! Andrew called his bride 'Sarah', the name of his ex-girlfriend of 13 years.

Thankfully, Rebecca didn’t escape out the window after marrying him like Emily did in the hit US sitcom, and the ‘surprised’ bride actually ‘laughed it off’ as she shared the same middle name as his former partner.

Andrew said of the mortifying moment: "It's the worst nightmare saying my ex's name but to be fair it's Rebecca's second name so I got her name all jumbled up when I was talking.

"I was bricking it and I was standing in front of friends and family trying not to say the wrong words. I was just shaking and sweating so I was just trying to get through the ceremony really as I don't like standing up in front of people.

"I wasn't even aware of it when I said it. Rebecca just looked at me and I thought 'what have I said wrong' and she corrected me.

"My brother put his hand on his face and my son shook his head and I thought 'I've clearly got something wrong'.”

Quickly correcting him as he didn’t realise what he’d said wrong, the mum-of-three took it like a champ and even laughed about it later when she took to TikTok with the blunder.

She captioned the moment: “When your new husband calls you his ex-girlfriend's name.”

Of course, it went viral and commenters were soon underneath the video to draw comparisons to the infamous Friends storyline.

While many found it to be a funny accident, others called Andrew a ‘big red flag’ because of it, but the pair still consider it the 'best day of their lives'.

"It's just one of those things but it's quite a common name. Although it's my ex, we've been separated for 10 years,” Andrew added. "I was glad she saw the funny side. She loves to take the p*** out of me for it and it comes up quite regularly. I don't take it too seriously but it's still embarrassing.”

Even he admitted it was a ‘real-life Ross and Rachel moment’ and also talked about the chance of it happening prior to the wedding as they are both fans of the show.

Anyway, Rebecca is fine with it, stating that she ‘saw the funny side in it’ and that she recognised he was nervous and latched onto the ‘Sarah bit’ of her name.
