Man claims saying one word while photo is being taken will make you look better

Man claims saying one word while photo is being taken will make you look better

He reckons you should avoid saying 'cheese' when you're having your picture taken

Pretty much anyone reading this is going to have had their photo taken at some point in their lives, and in that case you'll know you're often told to say 'cheese'.

This is because saying the word will stretch your mouth muscles into something resembling a smile.

It's one of the reasons why Wallace and Gromit makes so much mention of cheese, the word and the names of other cheeses allows Wallace to be pretty expressive.

However, you smile with more than just your mouth and there are other words you could say to produce a similar or even superior effect.

After all, a picture tells a thousand words and you don't want them all to be saying 'my smile doesn't look great'.

TikTok user RJ - or @rjthemagician - we should all actually be saying 'yeah' when we look into the camera for much better result.

His mouth says 'cheese' but the smile doesn't reach his eyes in this picture.

In a clip, he explains that the little tip actually came from Oprah Winfrey before sharing a photo of himself back when he was still saying 'cheese' and then a more recent photo where he was saying 'yeah'.

You can see in the second photograph RJ's smile does look a lot more natural and less forced than the earlier snap.

He explains: "The difference is a much more natural face, it's also a little bit of action as opposed to awkwardly waiting.

"You do not need to be conventionally attractive or have straight teeth to have a nice smile, don't let them fool you. Your smile is just you."

He ends the clip by telling his followers to 'use it wisely' because 'it's great'.

However, if you try this trick and you're still less than satisfied with how your photos turn out it could be because we don't really know what we actually look like.

This time around he was saying 'yeah' and the smile covered more of his face.

Yup, according to one expert, our photos can look a little off to us because we really don't know how we look.

Basically, you're mainly used to seeing yourself in the mirror - an 'inverted' version of your face.

In fact, according to expert Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioural science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, you most likely think you're better looking than you actually are.

Speaking to The Atlantic in 2014, Epley said: "The interesting thing is that people don't really know what they look like.

"The image you have of yourself in your mind is not quite the same as what actually exists."

Epley co-authored a study in 2008, which looked into how people perceive themselves and found 'that people recognise their own faces as being more physically attractive than they actually are'.

But before you panic too much, Epley added: "They're not wildly off, you don't think you're Brad Pitt.

"You're an expert at your own face, but that doesn't mean you're perfect at recognising it."
