A US cinema was forced to temporarily stop a screening of The Batman after a real bat somehow made its way inside the theatre and started flying around.

The bizarre footage was shared by filmgoers on Twitter. Watch below:

The video, uploaded by @Jeremiah24, shows a bat flying around the screen as onlookers look on bemused during a showing of The Batman at the Moviehouse & Eatery by Cinépolis in Austin, Texas on Friday night (4 March).

The lights have been turned on and the movie paused as theatre management interrupt the film to make several attempts to remove the bat.

These attempts, however, were apparently unsuccessful.

Jeremiah followed up the video with another tweet, explaining that apparently someone snuck the bat into the screening.

Another fan said the cinema offered to give everyone another ticket and cover their tabs, but the majority of the crowd opted to stay and watch the movie, 'bat and all'.

Twitter users were quick to make jokes about the strange scenes, with one user posting: "They're just trying to see their icon onscreen let them live."

Another user pointed out that things could have been worse, writing: "Good thing you didn’t go see Ant-Man."

Some users pointed out similarities to a scene from the sitcom Schitt's Creek, in which a character released live crows at the premiere for fictional film The Crows Have Eyes III: The Crowening.

One wrote: "Alexis Rose already did this with The Crows Have Eyes III: The Crowening movie premiere."

LADbible has contacted the Moviehouse & Eatery by Cinépolis for a comment.

The Batman hit cinemas earlier this week to rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Although the screening in Texas appears to be the only one featuring a live bat.

Den of Geek wrote that The Batman is 'one of the best superheroes films ever made' and says the movie is rooted in nostalgia but still has something new to say about the iconic character of Bruce Wayne.

While, IGN wrote that: "This is the scariest Batman yet. Right from the violent opening scene, the message is clear: this is not your mother's Caped Crusader."

The film has been 'certified fresh' by film review website Rotten Tomatoes with a critics score of 85 percent and a current audience rating of 90 percent.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the film stars Robert Pattinson in the leading role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. He's joined by Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Peter Sarsgaard, John Turturro and Zoë Kravitz.

The Batman is currently screening in cinemas worldwide.
