It's no secret that celebrities sometimes change their names to make it more showbiz-friendly.

Whether it's a slight tweak of the first or last name or coming up with a completely new identity, it can help someone appeal to the masses.

But you probably never knew that Jason Derulo isn't actually called Jason Derulo.

Wikipedia

The singer's name is iconic because he's one of a few artists who insists on saying it at the beginning, middle or end of pretty much every song.

However, a quick scan of his Wikipedia page will reveal that the 30-year-old's last name is Desrouleaux.

While it doesn't look the same as Derulo, it would probably still be pronounced the same way.

People have only just started cottoning on to this little known fact, with some likening his name to a spell on Harry Potter.

The hitmaker had been making songs for Diddy, Danity Kane, Donnie Klang, Sean Kingston, Cassie, and Lil Wayne since he was young. However, he also revealed himself to be a double threat when he showed off his dance moves.

Cut to 2009 with the release of 'Whatcha Say' and Derulo quickly became a household name.

Fans were similarly blown away when the full name of former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher was revealed to be William. His full name is William John Paul Gallagher, meaning that Liam was derived from the latter part of William.

The reason why he was most likely referred to as Liam instead of William is probably due to his parentage. His mum and dad, Peggy and Thomas, were both Irish, and the name William is often shortened to Liam in that neck of the woods.

Liam and Jason join a long line of artists who switched up their names.

Katy Perry was born Kathryn Hudson and used that second name in the early part of her career, however changed it to avoid being confused with actor Kate Hudson.

Michael Caine officially changed his name after his agent advised him that Maurice Joseph Micklewhite wouldn't sound slick.

Elton John was formerly Reginald Kenneth Dwight, Stevie Wonder was born Stevland Hardaway Judkins, Iggy Azalea is a stage name for Amethyst Amelia Kelly and Peter Gene Hernandez changed his name to Bruno Mars to avoid Puerto Rican stereotypes.
