Kim Kardashian Accused Of Cultural Appropriation Over Braids

Kim Kardashian has back accused of cultural appropriation after wearing her hair in braids while at Paris Fashion Week.

Thirty-nine-year-old Kim attended her husband Kanye West's Yeezy show on Monday with her daughter North West, six, and her seven-year-old niece Penelope Disick.

After photos appeared online, Kim was called out by some social media users for wearing her hair in a hairstyle which is historically viewed to be part of black culture.

One person shared a snap of Kim on Twitter, writing 'YOU ARE NOT BLACK' alongside it, while another wrote: "You'd think she'd learn. Put your hair up in a high pony and go to the fashion show like everyone else." A third simply questioned how she 'keeps getting away with it'.

This isn't the first time Kim has been accused of cultural appropriation for her hairstyle, having previously been slammed for wearing cornrows on the red carpet.

In 2018 she spoke to Bustle about the accusations saying: "I remember the backlash when I had the blonde hair and that I called them Bo Derek braids.

"But I obviously know they're called Fulani braids and I know the origin of where they came from and I'm totally respectful of that. I'm not tone deaf to where I don't get it. I do get it. In no way am I ever trying to disrespect anyone's culture by wearing braids."

Kim said she initially chose the style because her daughter wanted braids and asked if Kim would get them, too.

She added: "My daughter was so excited to see me get matching braids with her. [When] we did her hair in these braids, she was so excited."

Earlier this year, Kim's half-sister Kylie Jenner was also criticised by fans for cultural appropriation after posting an Instagram Story in which she showed off her blond locks in twist braids.

One person wrote: "The cultural appropriation jumped out."

A second added: "She wants to be a black woman so bad, until it's time to be a black woman."

However, photographers Morelli brothers, who took the shot, claimed the inspiration for the shoot was actually singer Gwen Stefani.
