Alan Ritchson is unrecognisable in forgotten American Idol audition that saw Simon Cowell leave set
Alan Ritchson may now be known as one of the world’s premiere action stars and the lead of Reacher, but the actor was once best known for being Aquaman on Smallville, Thad Castle on Blue Mountain State, and for some: as the American Idol star who almost carried Paula Abdul out the room during his audition.
Ritchson’s rise to celebrity has been fairly gradual but Reacher has been his undoubted breakout moment. The TV remake of the popular book series has led to roles in films by Guy Ritchie, Netflix franchise films, and non-stop rumours he is set to become a DC superhero again.
For many however, the first time fans will have seen Ritchson will have been when he appeared on American Idol, making it all the way to the semi-finals. According to the actor though, we probably wouldn’t have gotten him in Reacher if not for American Idol.
Ritchson auditioned for season three and made it through after Paula Abdul called him ‘totally hot’
At the time Ritchson was a fashion model and his audition went well after Paula Abdul said he was ‘totally hot’, joking that this ‘didn’t influence her decision… that much’.

Randy Jackson gave him advice saying that he needs to avoid using runs in his singing but ultimately all three end up saying yes to him.
In between the initial audition and his eventual last performance he was given a ‘villain edit’ according to Ritchson, showing him flirting with and pushing a contestant into a pool, something he later said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! he had been told to do by producers.
He gave a fairly cringe-worthy performance in the Hollywood week round, ultimately being cut before the finals.
According to Ritchson however this was a major break for him in his career.
Ritchson called American Idol an ‘eye-opening experience’ and explained how it set up his career in acting
Speaking in an interview with Dax Shephard on Armchair Expert he states that it was a good experience and that he wasn’t too phased when he was cut, but that someone next to him who was also cut fell to the ground ‘like a cockroach, it was like her life was over’.
He explained: “I was just observing it like ‘what is it like to want something that bad?’ I’d never felt that before.
“It made me want to move out to LA. I still didn't know about acting at that point… I wanted to be around people who were like I’m going to die if I don’t get this thing.”
He claimed American Idol ‘opened some doors’ for him and that shortly afterwards was when he got the role of Aquaman on Smallville.
In other interviews he’s stated if he ever met Paula Abdul again he would ‘thank her for the crack in the door’.
