13 years ago yesterday, 8 June, during the Britain’s Got Talent live final, a woman from the orchestra ran to the front of the stage and began gleefully lobbing eggs at Simon Cowell’s head.
She was quickly dragged off stage and the Britain's Got Talent cameras panned away from her, but not before an iconic meme was born.
Unlike other viral memes however who fade into obscurity and try make a living off that fame, the woman in question who egged Cowell went on to find an incredibly successful career in TV and Film – and even went on to explain why she did it.
Called Natalie Holt, the now 43-year-old musician explained in The Guardian that egging Cowell was a protest, elaborating on why exactly she did it.

She was hired as part of the 'live band' during the performance, but has stated that she was simply asked to mime playing because the music from the instruments was being piped in.
Why did Natalie Holt egg Simon Cowell live on TV?

Speaking in her piece for The Guardian in 2013, Holt explained: “My actions were intended as a non-violent, egg-based protest because I think Cowell has too much power and influence in the entertainment industry.”
She apologised to the two singers, Adam and Richard Johnson, whose performance she disrupted, but stated she wanted to ‘make him look silly’, adding: “Everyone is scared of standing up to people like Cowell. I don't dislike him personally; I just don't like what he represents.
“Reality TV talent shows are not the way to discover the next Beatles, or to nurture talented musicians and entertainers. The people who seem to benefit most from talent shows are the judges.”
She appeared on the 2013 Big Fat Quiz of the Year, adding: “I just thought Simon Cowell’s got too much power and influence in the music industry, so I thought it’d be funny to throw an egg at him.
Natalie Holt is now a renowned TV and Film composer
Marvel fans may recognise her name, but not from being the icon who egged Cowell, but from creating the beloved score for the Disney+ show Loki which was widely praised as one of the strongest aspects of the show.
In addition to this, Holt has composed the score for the new Emily Atack and David Tennant show Rivals, the Star Wars show Obi Wan Kenobi, and the incredibly underrated Irish drama Herself.
On the anniversary of the egging a video was posted on X, with one reply saying: “The woman being future acclaimed film and television score composer Natalie Holt makes this all the more funnier.”

She later joked about the incident in a Reddit AMA about Loki where a fan asked how she ‘likes her eggs’, replying: “Not on my face... I've been banned from buying eggs in all British Supermarkets.”
Holt is now a huge success in the industry, Cowell was able to wash his clothes and get the egg off his face pretty sharpish, so it sounds like it all worked out well.
