Alison Brie and Dave Franco are one of Hollywood’s best-known relationships and, for the first time, are starring in a film together and playing a couple.

Brie and Franco are starring together in Together, a body horror film directed by Michael Shanks about a couple who take the plunge and move to a remote town in the country. While there, they become consumed by a bizarre otherworldly force that begins to cause them to morph together.

The pair have been in a relationship for well over a decade, with Franco proposing in 2015 after they met in 2011 at Mardi Gras.

Despite this though, the pair have rejected cultural expectations and spoken about why they have chosen to not to become parents, something they reiterated in interviews for Together.

Brie, best known for her roles in Community and Netflix's Glow, spoke about the decision in an interview with The New York Times in 2019.

She stated that neither of the pair wanted kids, saying that their cats Harry and Arturo are their children.

She added: “I don’t really want to have kids… It’s great, because I don’t worry about when should I get pregnant, between seasons, while we’re shooting the show, I don’t think about it every day.

“It would be nice, but I think of all the things that would be so stressful.

“I think about how much we’re involved in our cats’ lives. Oh my God, if it was a child.”

Their new film has been a major hit with critics so far, sitting at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tomris Laffly of RogerEbert.com gave the film a 3.5/4 star rating, saying: “Finding out whether an on-screen couple have what it takes has rarely felt this cutting, and, ultimately, this rewarding.”

Spoilers ahead for the ending to Together

In an interview about Together, Franco and Brie reiterated their desire not to have kids.

Over the course of the film, their characters Tim and Millie are forced together by some otherworldly being brought on by drinking water from a sunken underground cult (no, really).

At the end they give in and allow it to meld them from two people into one.

The film ends with a combination of Tim and Millie answering the door to Millie’s parents.

This was achieved by Alison Brie wearing prosthetics that unsettlingly combined their two looks and, speaking about this in an interview with USA Today, James Franco said: “But if that’s what we look like when we’re fused together maybe that’s further reinforcement that we should not have children.”

Brie responds quite deadpan, saying: “Yeah, this is the reason we’re not having kids!”

Together is in cinemas now in the United States and releases August 15th in the UK.
