Cameron Diaz urges couples to try getting a 'sleep divorce' with trend becoming much more popular

Actor Cameron Diaz advised people to try the viral trend

Cameron Diaz has suggested that couples should try a new sleeping trend.

It may not be the most conventional sign of love, but the American actor appeared to sing its praises and urged people to try something that has been dubbed a 'sleep divorce'.

This year, the Charlie's Angels star will make her return to the big screen following a 10 year hiatus, coming out of retirement to star in Netflix movie Back In Action, alongside Jamie Foxx. The movie is set to be released in November.

After growing tired of travelling for work, Diaz took a step back to focus on philanthropy and her family, as she has welcomed two children in the world with husband Benji Madden.

But it seems the 51-year-old somewhat back in the limelight, and has talked relationships.

Specifically, the act of sleeping when you have a partner - we all know the conditions that come with that.

The right to your own duvet and bed are revoked, and you are signing yourself up to a life of fighting for the covers in a bed that feels too small, pretty much forever.

It's sure to get on your nerves, but then so do the little things when you're in a long-term relationship, be it loud chewing, leaving the toilet seat up or general messiness - there's a solution to every problem.

But what about the sleeping issue?

The new trend that's going around on social media is called having a 'sleep divorce', but it's not as brutal as it sounds.

A sleep divorce is basically when couples choose to have individual sleeping arrangements - so that's different beds, sleep times, or even completely separate rooms.

According to research conducted last year by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), a whopping 29 percent of US residents are opting to sleep separately from their partners.

The hashtag 'sleepdivorce' also has over a million views on TikTok, with Google searches for the term also skyrocketing in the last month or so.

And to back the method up more, Diaz has seemingly given it the seal of approval during an appearance on Molly Sims' Lipstick on the Rim podcast last year.

“We should normalise separate bedrooms,” she said.

Diaz continued: “To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I'm fine.”

It's quite ironic that this is the same Diaz who's character shared a tiny bed with Jude Law in the iconic Christmas romcom, The Holiday.

But she might have a point, though no studies have yet proven that the method is beneficial to your sleep.
