An emotional essay written by Bruce Willis' wife has laid bare the reality of living with dementia and the impact it has on special occasions.

Emma Heming Willis, who married the Hollywood star in 2009, penned a lengthy piece, titled 'The Holidays Look Different Now', where she detailed her 'tangled web of grief' over her husband's condition and shared the impact it has had on the festive season.

Bruce, 70, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in February 2023 and his family - including ex-wife Demi Moore and their daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31 - have continued to share updates with fans while raising awareness of the neurodegenerative condition.

The Die Hard star's wife, 47, told how he had always loved Christmas, but he was no longer in the 'centre of it all' due to his health.

"The holidays have a way of holding up a mirror, reflecting who we’ve been, who we are, and what we imagined they would be," she wrote. "When you’re caring for someone with dementia, that reflection can feel especially poignant."

The mum-of-two, who shares Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, with Bruce, said previously effortless traditions now required huge amounts of planning because 'uncomplicated joy may arrive tangled in a web of grief'.

In an emotional comment, she added: "There can still be warmth. There can still be joy. I’ve learned that the holidays don’t disappear when dementia enters your life. They change."

Emma went on to reflect on the changes that dementia has prompted in her and Bruce's life, explaining how many of their familiar routines no longer exist.

"Grief doesn’t only belong to death. It belongs to change and the ambiguous loss caregivers know so well. It belongs to the realisation that things won’t unfold the way they once did. It belongs to the absence of routines, conversations, or roles that were once so familiar you never imagined them ending," she wrote.

The model regularly uses her platform to raise awareness of dementia, advocate for caregivers and share updates with fans about her family. She is the author of The Unexpected Journey, which is a guide to help other caregivers navigate difficult experiences.

Emma's latest update comes after Bruce's daughter Rumer revealed that the dad-of-five is doing well, all things considered. Speaking to her followers on Instagram, the actress sadly revealed that Bruce doesn't always recognise her.

"I’m so grateful that when I go over there and I give him a hug, whether he recognises me or not, that he can feel the love I’ve given him and I can feel it back from him," Rumer said.

"I still see a spark of him and he can feel the love that I’m giving, so that feels really nice."
