‘The Mountain’ sets huge new deadlift world record

Is he the strongest man to have ever walked God's green earth?

Game of Thrones strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson has broken his own world record for deadlifting at Birmingham's Strongman Competition.

Internationally recognised as the eyeball-squishing Ser Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane - the eventually zombified protector of Queen Cersei Lannister - the Icelandic star is incredibly active in the strength sports scene and was even inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame just two years ago.

Björnsson remains the only individual to have won the Arnold Strongman Classic, Europe's Strongest Man, and World's Strongest Man championships in the same calendar year back in 2018.

Over the weekend, the 36-year-old outshone his previous insane weight of 505kg by lifting 510kg at the 2025 competition.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Wow!" yelled the commentator. "And the first thing that comes to mind when you look at that is the fact that that was easy! Look upon The Mountain, look upon Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson of Iceland!"

Next came the social media comments, with Strongman fans aware that they'll probably never see anybody as powerful as Björnsson ever again.

"Okay I expected some struggling at least lol — that was smooth as hell," read one of their takes.

"Mind-blowing how good this man really is! By the looks of it, he could go to 525 easy" a second said.

A third wrote: "Bro's gonna conquer the throne after this one. Congrats The Mountain!"

In a YouTube vlog addressing his world record attempt, last month, Björnsson claimed the 510kg was a strategic number as opposed to reflecting his limitations.

"People have been asking me a lot of questions like, what if 510 is light, will you go for heavier? And the honest answer is ‘no,’ I won’t go for heavier because I’m also going to do the whole show. I want to win the whole show and there are a lot of great athletes competing today."

The actor, who will play Goat Man in next year's Hollywood adaptation of Masters of the Universe alongside Nicholas Galitzine, Idris Elba, Jared Leto, and Together's Alison Brie, went on to explain that lifting such an immense amount of weight can wreck your nervous system 'a little bit'.

In the end, Björnsson maintained ultimate focus to become this year's Strongman in Birmingham.

He wrote after his 510kg lift on Instagram: "Crazy how easy it felt. I honestly believe I could have deadlifted 530kg yesterday."

And in a separate post: "Surrounded by my team, fueled by my people, backed by my sponsors

"Records come and go, but LEGACY stays forever."
