Cillian Murphy won a Golden Globe for best actor last night, but viewers watching along at home couldn’t help but be slightly distracted by his face.

The 47-year-old star scooped the Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama award for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, one of five wins for the flick.

Oppenheimer also won the awards for Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr and Best Original Score - Motion Picture for Ludwig Göransson. So a pretty successful night, then.

Murphy, who is best known for playing Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders, was nominated alongside fellow Irish actors Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) as well as Leonardo DiCaprio (Killers of the Flower Moon) Bradley Cooper (Maestro) and Colman Domingo (Rustin).

Accepting the award, Murphy said: he said: “I knew the first time I walked on a Chris Nolan set it was different.

“I could tell by the level of vigour, focus, the level of dedication and the complete lack of seating options for actors.”

He then paid tribute to their collaboration of ‘20 years and six fecking pictures’, before thanking his co-stars for ‘carrying me and holding me through this movie’.

Murphy also paid tribute to his fellow nominees, saying: “If you’re Irish or not, you’re all legends and I salute you.”

However, while giving his speech fans couldn’t help but notice that the Irish star had a smear of lipstick across his face.

In the excitement after his name was read out, Murphy’s proud wife Yvonne McGuinness grabbed her husband for a smooch - accidentally getting lipstick all over his face in the process.

Despite doing her best to wipe it away, Murphy ended up walking up to accept his award with some red lippy lingering across his nose.

Posting on X, one viewer said: Cillian Murphy receiving his award with his wife's red lipstick on his nose is the best thing I saw tonight.”

Another commented: “This is probably my favourite moment of the night! Cillian Murphy’s lipstick on the nose after winning his Golden Globe.”

While a third added: “Cillian Murphy accepting the award with lipstick on his face is extremely iconic I can’t lie.”

Someone else wrote: “Cillian Murphy accepting his award with lipstick all over his nose is so cute.”

Murphy addressed it himself, asking the audience: “First question: do I have lipstick all over my nose? I’m just going to leave it.”

You might kick off a new trend, mate.
