Coleen Rooney has shared why she decided to forgive husband Wayne after he cheated with sex workers.

The former footballer and Coleen while they were still at school and tied the knot in 2008 - they share four sons: Kai, Klay, Kit and Cass.

But their relationship was rocked in 2004 when stories of the England star meeting with sex workers hit headlines.

At the time, Wayne issued an apology, saying: "Foolish as it now seems I did on occasions visit massage parlours and prostitutes. I now regret it deeply and hope people may understand that it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid. It was at a time when I was very young and immature."

Coleen has opened up about the incident - and the headlines that followed - in her new memoir My Account: The Official Autobiography, saying that it actually happened two years before it was reported ‘a few months’ into their relationship.

She wrote: "The full story was that when he was sixteen, Wayne had visited prostitutes in a Liverpool massage parlour. When Wayne sat me down and told me it was true and that the story was about to break in the national press I was confused and hurt. I couldn't even speak to him. More than that, I felt ashamed.

“Everyone knew, and everyone seemed to have an opinion. I sat with it all swirling around me like some horrible dream, unable to decide what was best or what I wanted.”

However, she went on to say that a ‘voice inside’ told her not to make any hasty decisions and that she decided to meet up with him to give a chance to explain.

During the meeting, Wayne admitted what he’d done but insisted that some part of the story had been ‘fabricated’.

After taking some advice from her auntie and uncle, the pair went on a trip to Blackpool, where they were able to experience a bit of ‘normality’ and were able to discuss their future.

In the coming days and week, Coleen decided to forgive Wayne.

“He knew how bad this was, how wrong,” she wrote.

“He looked down at the floor as he told me how devastated he felt having put me in that situation.

"I was still fuming, of course, and there were definitely a few screaming matches in the days to come. In the end though, I accepted that this had happened a long time ago and that we were stronger now, more committed.”
