Chappell Roan has left the Grammys and the internet in shock after she donned an X-rated 'topless' outfit on the red carpet.

The 27-year-old, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, was attending the prestigious music event in LA last night after she was nominated for record of the year with her hit song 'The Subway'.

Away from the music, and the various performers speaking out against ICE in their acceptance speeches, it was Roan's outfit which perhaps attracted the most attention on the night.

It was only last year when Bianca Censori wore her naked dress at the Grammys before she and her partner at the time Kanye West were reportedly asked to leave, so the Grammys clearly has a strange history when it comes to celebrities going au naturale, which makes even less sense given the temperatures in early February.

In Roan's case, it wasn't quite a dress where you could see everything, as she hung the Mugler dress from nipple rings, while also covering her chest and back in 'medieval tattoos'.

Andrew Dahling, who helped to create the look, told Marie Claire: "We started with this very archival, full, bare moment. Once the tattoos came into play, everything became very medieval, but in a real way. It's still fantasy and something otherworldly, but grounded.

"There was so much going on—the tattoos, the prosthetic nipples, all of it, but overall we wanted everything to feel cohesive and really honour the dress and the medieval world we were living in. The glam came from that."

So while it wasn't quite a topless look for the 'Pink Pony Club' performer, it still shocked large parts of the internet, who seemingly had a split view on whether or not they liked the look.

One social media user said: "Idk why...but this look reminds me of a Gustav Klimt painting. She looks beautiful."

Another wrote: "Queen of the World."

And a third added: "She ate that idc what everyone thinks."

However, not everyone was a fan and suggested that more should have been covered up.

One said: "Can we bring back covering ourselves?" as a second quipped: "The days of class are long gone."

And a third added: "I struggle to grasp the conceptual depth of this so-called work of art beyond its apparent intention to provoke outrage and fuel public discourse. If shock is the primary medium, I’m left questioning whether there is a deeper narrative at play, or merely spectacle disguised as meaning."

Although the singer was ultimately unsuccessful in claiming a Grammy, she's certainly grabbed the public's attention with her outlandish outfit.
