Trevor Noah makes controversial joke while hosting Grammy awards following Donald Trump’s inauguration

South African comedian Trevor Noah took a dig at President Donald Trump while hosting the 2025 Grammys

Comedian Trevor Noah made a little dig at President Donald Trump while hosting the 2025 Grammy Awards.

The South African TV presenter is best known for his time as host of The Daily Show, a satirical news show on Comedy Central that reports political news in the US and across the world in a comedic way.

Hosting the Grammys for a fifth time last night (2 February), Noah took the opportunity to address a number of ongoing societal issues, to go along with his light jokes aimed at celebrities.

It was a powerful speech for an opening monologue, though in terms of humour, it might not come close to Ricky Gervais' controversial comments while fronting the Golden Globes.

Noah is known for making light of serious situations or using his comedy to put certain political matters into perspective.

But on Sunday night, the 40-year-old took the chance to aim a little criticism at Donald Trump, something that he used to do fairly often on The Daily Show.

Referencing the 47th US President's comments on immigration, he said: “There’s been a few changes in Washington. So I’m gonna enjoy tonight because this may be my last time I get to host anything in this country.”

The comedian hinted at the focus put on immigration by the Trump administration as one of their main focus points since coming into office, as the President has already cracked down on those who had illegally entered the country from Mexico.

As reported by the BBC, thousands of people were arrested within the first week of his presidency by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The ordeal caused the likes of Selena Gomez to take to social media to share their sadness.

That's not all though, as Noah also brought attention to other serious matters such as the devastating Los Angeles fires, praising the people of the city for their 'spirit'.

But after a short performance from rock duo Dawes, the host reverted back to making jokes about some of the musicians up for awards.

Noah suggested that the advancement of AI could give us a new Rihanna album, with the last one being released in 2016.

He even had a positive roast for pop sensation Taylor Swift, who was up for a number of awards, pointing out that she might break her own record of most 'Best Album' wins.

This wasn't the case though, as Beyoncé walked away with the award this year for her album, 'Cowboy Carter'.
