Jim Carrey was called out for ‘creepy’ joke he told to Margot Robbie on Graham Norton show

The actress appeared to take the joke well... but viewers at home were not impressed

Jim Carrey may be well known (and loved) for his comedic performances, but the actor's jokes haven't always received a positive reaction from his audience.

In-fact, the Dumb and Dumber actor once received backlash for a comments he made towards Barbie star Margot Robbie.

Back in 2020 the pair appeared on an episode of The Graham Norton Show together, sharing the famous red sofa with Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith.

During the episode Carrey decided to share his appreciation on Robbie's talents as an actor - however his well-intentioned compliment didn't quite receive the intended feedback. Take a look at the exchange below:

Carrey begins by mentioning that he'd never visited Robbie's native Australia, a revelation which surprised the actress.

The How the Grinch Stole Christmas star continued to pile on the praise, adding: "I wanted to talk to you because you're amazing and I'm so excited for you."

So far so good right? Nothing too risqué or potentially offensive said?

However, things start to go downhill from here, as Carrey then moves on to discussing Robbie's looks and acting skills.

"It's incredible you got as far as you have with your obvious physical disadvantages," he joked. "That's pure talent there. That's a talent override there."

Robbie appears to take the joke in her stride, smiling and laughing in response to the joke - however, the people watching along at home were not feeling as kind.

"Did Jim Carrey just tell Margot Robbie she's got where she is because of her looks? Can't stand the man tbh," one person wrote on social media at the time.

Another wrote: "Did anyone else think Jim Carrey comment about Margot Robbie on The Graham Norton Show was not okay. She's an amazing actress and now a successful producer, had it been a male actor in her seat I doubt Jim Carrey would have commented on their 'obvious physical disadvantages'."

"Did Jim Carrey seriously insinuate that Margot Robbie only got where she is because of her looks? She's only a bloody Oscar nominee! I thought we were past this people," a third chipped in, while a fourth added: "Jimmy is the ultimate unfunny creep."

Meanwhile, Robbie was praised for her 'classy' reaction, with one person posting: "Shameful moment. I cringed but Margot handled the idiot with grace and poise!"

Roasting aside, we doubt that Robbie would be too upset about the comment, given that she's an internationally famous actress who played the lead role in 2023's biggest blockbuster Barbie as well as starring in films such as I, Tonya, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Wolf of Wall Street.

She also co-owns a production company with her husband Tom Ackerley and welcomed her first child in October 2024.

Whether Carrey was joking or not, I think Robbie will be just fine.
