Singer Michael Kiwanuka, 39, reveals he suffered a stroke

Brit Award nominee Michael Kiwanuka has told fans he is facing a 'long, tough journey' to recovery after suffering a stroke.

The London-born singer, 39, shared an update on his health with fans in an Instagram on Wednesday (23 September), explaining that he endured a 'quite severe' brain injury.

"A few months ago I suffered a stroke brought on by a bleed in my brain brought on by high blood pressure," he said.

"It's a long journey recovering from a stroke, which is why I missed some gigs recently out in the US, but I look forward to seeing you all soon.

"I'm not sure when I'll be able to be back out on the road or what that will look like, the brain injury I suffered was quite severe so there's a lot of rehab to be done, it's a long, tough journey ahead but I'm fighting to get better.

"It has been a difficult few months I must say but it feels like I'm on my way there now."

Kiwanuka - who won the Mercury Prize back in 2020 and has been nominated for five Brit Awards - then heaped praise on the 'incredible NHS staff' who helped care for him.

He described his experience as 'one of the toughest challenges' he has faced.

"I'll be happy to be on the other side of it when the time comes," Kiwanuka went on. "Until then, I wish you all well and look forward to seeing you further down the road."

Grammy Award winner Miguel was among those wishing the hitmaker well in the comment section of his post.

"Man, take your time healing you are needed brother," the 'Adorn' singer, 40, wrote.

Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien added: "Sending love to you Michael."
