Olivia Rodrigo's dress melts off her body mid-song on first night of her new tour

Gigs can look a lot different these days to how they used to and Olivia Rodrigo took things to a new level last night with an unorthodox costume change on night one of her ongoing tour.

Rodrigo kicked off her 'The Unraveled Tour' at the PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut, on Friday night and she quickly became the talk of the town with one of the stunts during her performances.

In recent years, we've seen the likes of Sabrina Carpenter adopt some interesting positions during her live performances, while anyone who's seen Tame Impala recently might recall the moment a camera follows Kevin Parker for a wee half-way through the night.

Nothing will ever beat David Byrne dancing with a lamp or running around the stage with Talking Heads if you ask me and some of the recent trends are actually quite disturbing, with Rodrigo herself speaking about how she can 'smell' some of the fans who go to extreme methods to keep their spots.

She said: “I have been to certain concerts and certain festivals where people wear diapers so that they can be front row of the show, and it's been an experience as a performer that I've smelled."

But it was the 23-year-old who is making headlines on social media with what went down during her performance of 'The Cure', when rain started coming down from the ceiling, George Sampson-style.

Instead of launching into some questionable breakdancing moves however, the 'Vampire' singer twirled in circles as the rain attempted to melt away what appeared to be a paper-made white dress, to reveal a red dress underneath.

However, things got a little bit stuck and she had to remove a lot of the dress herself, which sadly left it looking a little bit like wet toilet paper, which I suppose would be appropriate given what some people are doing at gigs these days.

The fans in the audience seemed to love it but those on social media are a little more split with the stunt.

One user said: "That performance sounds absolutely wild Olivia really knows how to make a moment unforgettable."

Another wrote: "That staging effect looked insane live, totally caught everyone off guard."

Not everyone was convinced however, with some criticising the look in the comments on social media.

One said: "This would be so tea if it didn’t look like wet toilet paper on her body."

Many compared the stunt to that of Katnis Everdeen in the Hunger Games, even if it was a little less smoothly done, but then again this was the first night of the tour so maybe we'll see it improve as the tour goes on.

Hopefully she's got some more paper dresses ready to go for the rest of her performances.
