Ricky Gervais has revealed the ‘brutal’ jokes he would have used if he were hosting this year’s Golden Globes awards.

The event, taking place this evening in the US, marks the kick-off to this year’s award season proper, with it only a few months until the Oscars.

Nikki Glaser will host this year, the first solo woman to host the awards show ever.

She follows last year’s controversial Jo Koy, so controversial that he was booed on stage, with his ‘jokes’ eliciting groans from the crowd.

He was also criticised for being ‘sexist’ due to his jokes about Barbie.

His poor performance as a host led many to suggest that the awards show bring back Ricky Gervais, who has hosted the show on five separate occasions.

Gervais hosted for three consecutive years, 2010, 2011, and 2012, before returning in 2016.

2020 was the last time the comedian who created The Office took the reins of the show, where he was known for his skewering takes unafraid to be more critical of Hollywood than the average host.

Gervais took to Twitter to suggest what his jokes this year would have been, after earlier this week saying to Glaser to ‘be herself’ in a message of support.

He tweeted: “Sat in the bath wondering about what I would say if I were hosting the Golden Globes on Sunday. It’s been a pretty good year for material.”

The comedian said he would have led off with a dig at the Vatican church off the back of Conclave, saying he would have opened with: “Hello, and welcome to the 82nd Golden Globe awards.

“What a year it’s been. Hundreds of entertainers jumped at the chance to go to The Vatican to meet The Pope. Many from Hollywood.

“Obviously they weren’t content with only being part of the second biggest paedo ring in the world…”

He suggested another joke in which he would say: “Justin Timberlake was convicted of Drink Driving.

“If he’d have gone to jail, he’d have heard the words ‘Sexy Back’ a lot more often.”

Gervais also used an offensive term for little people to suggest he would have made a joke about Kevin Hart being mistaken for a child at one of P Diddy’s parties.

In his time hosting the Globes, Gervais made jokes about Harvey Weinstein, Mel Gibson’s DUI and anti-semitic rant, as well as jokes about the Hollywood foreign press being ‘very, very racist’.
