Known for his multiple film credits in Predator, Toy Story 4, Happy Gilmore, and The Mandalorian among others, Weathers peacefully passed away in his sleep.

"Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognised worldwide and across generations.

"He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend."

Born on 14 January 1948 in New Orleans, Weathers had more than 75 film and TV credits throughout his career, which spans over five decades.

He most recently appeared as Greef Karga in The Mandalorian, as a part of the Star Wars universe, also directing a couple of episodes in the series.

His acting role earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Carl Weather's last notable acting role was in The Mandalorian.

Prior to his acting career, Weathers was a professional American Football player, winning the AFC West Division Title with the Oakland Raiders.

But Weathers is best known for his role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies, who gave journeyman boxer Rocky Balboa a title shot in the first movie, but later died in the ring by Russian heavyweight Ivan Drago in Rocky IV after appearances in Rocky II and III.

Known as a strongman in his early career, he also starred alongside Arnold Schwarznegger in Predator.

He also voiced Combat Carl in the Oscar-winning Toy Story 4, while also enjoying a lighter role as Derick “Chubbs” Peterson opposite Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore as Gilmore's (Sandler) golf coach.

He sported a wooden replacement hand in the film, a gag put in place as his character had lost his hand to an alligator earlier in his career.

Weathers played a wide range of characters throughout his career, with fans quick to show their love and appreciation for the actor.

One said: "He was so damn iconic man, gone way too soon."

Another commented: "He will be remembered for his talent, charm, and unforgettable performances. Rest in peace, Mr. Weathers."

A third concluded: "Truly wonderful actor that left a lasting impression. Great presence on screen."
