Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively had to follow a certain ‘rule’ when they first started dating.

Love them or hate them, there’s no denying the pair are an absolute power couple of the Hollywood world – even if they are constantly taking the p**s out of each other on social media.

The pair first met back in 2010 when Reynolds starred in the film adaptation of Green Lantern alongside Lively – who played the superhero’s love interest.

Feelings clearly developed during filming as they went public with their romance in 2011. The stars then secretly got married at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina in 2012 and now share four kids.

Ah yes, all very romantic. But it hasn’t always necessarily been so easy.

I mean, Lively and Reynolds are both booked and busy movie stars meaning they have to balance their work schedule with their kids and well, being a couple.

So, thanks to some forward planning, the couple made sure they’d always make time to focus on their marriage.

They came up with this specific rule when they first started dating well over a decade ago, and it wasn’t just for those early days. Nope, they came up with a lifelong rule to follow until death does them part.

Chatting to Entertainment Tonight, Lively shared this secret to her happy marriage with Reynolds.

"When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time," she said. "So that we could always prioritise our personal life."

The A Simple Favor star admitted that obviously that’s not exactly easy and it took some time to follow that rule after becoming parents.

"That takes working really hard when we're not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that; it takes balance," the mum-of-four continued.

"I'm used to working hard and going and going and going and going and not stopping.

"Especially, Gossip Girl was six years of my life, and we were sometimes shooting three episodes at once."

Reynolds also agrees that this little relationship ‘rule’ has been working out fine for them so far as he spoke with Access Hollywood about keeping their spark alive amid the madness of working in film and raising four little ones.

He explained: “We don’t split up. Like, I shoot movies and my wife shoots movies, and we go travel all over the place, and we just all go together.

“I think that’s been the best part of it is that we really don’t spend a lot of time apart. I get to spend a lot of time with my girls.”
