Complicated relationship between Selena Gomez and woman who donated kidney to her explained

Francia helped save Selena's life back in 2017

The worlds of celebrities are often less dramatic than they seem, but when it comes to Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa's relationship, things are certainly spicy.

Having both found fame as child actors, the duo met in 2007, although it is the Wizards of Waverley Place alum who would go on to become more of a household name, literally earning billions from her career as an actor, singer, and business owner.

Raisa has continued to act and featured in the Disney Plus spin-off How I Met Your Father but even with her professional skills, it was easy to tell that the 37-year-old was more than a little annoyed about being snubbed from Gomez's A-lister wedding to Benny Blanco last month.

You might think that it's perfectly normal for friends, and even former roommates, to drift apart of the best part of 20 years but if it wasn't for Raisa, there's a very real chance that Gomez might not even still be here today.

Back in 2007, the Only Murders In The Building star was diagnosed with lupus in 2013 and discovered that she needed a kidney transplant, something her close friend was more than willing to offer in order to save her life.

After a successful transplant, Gomez took to Instagram to thank Francia, writing: “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

News of Gomez's health scare only broke when she confirmed the transplant on social media, with Raisa suggesting that they both struggled with mental health issues and wanted to avoid media attention in the wake of the surgery.

She said: "We didn’t want to tell anybody because recovery was very hard for us, and we went through a depression at the time. We kind of just wanted to be normal and not have that attention on us. I really left it up to her. I’ve never had anything personal come out about me before."

However, things seemingly took a turn for the worse when Gomez suggested that Taylor Swift was her 'only friend in the industry', which led Raisa to comment 'interesting' and unfollow her bestie on Instagram.

Although a woman who donated her kidney to a boss managed to get fired, you would have thought that Raisa's friendship with Gomez was for life, and it seems as if the two had made up when they addressed their feud rumours with a humorous post which saw them wearing matching t-shirts saying 'no beef, just salsa'.

Raisa had previously said: “We’ve never really had beef with each other. Nothing happened, and if you ask either of us, we don’t know what happened but we needed that time apart. Then when you come back together, you’re better people. She and I are still getting to know each other again.”

So, with the two reconnected, and Gomez not exactly short of cash to pay for extravagant wedding, you would have though that her saviour would have made the shortlist for wedding guests, but it seems as if she wasn't invited.

Speaking in a recent interview, she said: "I know that she's getting married and I'm very happy for her. And look, she has a life and she is already a billionaire and I am grateful that I could do that for her. It's a donation and it's something nice that I was able to do.

"I am grateful that I am alive and I can say that I have saved a life."
