An odd exchange between Selena Gomez and Samuel L. Jackson was caught on camera last night, and a lip reader had revealed what may have been said.

Gomez, 32 and Jackson, 76, were presenting at last night's Oscars, reading out the winner of Best Documentary.

The award went to the four directors behind No Other Land, a film focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with two of their directors from Israel, and the other two from Palestine.

It also starred two of them, in Palestinian Basel Adra and Israeli Yuval Abraham.

Following the emotional win, the pair gave passionate speeches about the situation in Gaza, speaking against the displacement of the Palestinians and more to do with the ongoing war.

But in the background, Gomez and Jackson could be seen chatting to one another, resulting in a few laughs and giggles.

The awkward exchange was caught by many viewers and now, lip reader Nicola Hickling of Lipreader LIMITED has revealed what the celebrities could have been saying during the political statement.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she explained that when Abraham was wrapping up, Jackson apparently said to the Wizards of Waverley Place star: "He made that speech very political."

She responded: "He did, yes," according to Hickling.

Gomez could be seen with a smile while the Pulp Fiction actor was talking to her, with the latter laughing during their exchange.

Here's the moment, in case you missed it:

The speech was very geared towards raising awareness of the situation in that part of the world, though many people took to social media to point out the two stars looking 'uncomfortable' during the 'most important' speech of the ceremony.

One wrote: "Selena Gomez and Samuel L Jackson, care to share what’s so funny with the audience?"

Another said: "Can I just say f*** you to Samuel L Jackson and Selena Gomez standing there looking so uncomfortable and laughing during the most important acceptance speech of this awards season."

However, others were more supportive of the pair, as a third wrote: "It was cause the directors of the awards told them not to do any clapping or whatever."

A different user replied to some criticism, saying: "Odd because I saw them smiling and clapping not laughing and looking uncomfortable. You should get your eyes checked."

After Abraham spoke about the US foreign policy and how it 'blocks this path' to a political solution, applause from the audience followed.
