Warning: This article contains discussion of drug addiction which some readers may find distressing.

It’s an unfortunate but all too real trend that, in many cases, the child stars from films you loved as a kid rarely go on to have much of a career after their early fame, and in some cases completely spiral.

Though in recent years he has turned things around in his career, this was Home Alone’s Macaulay Culkin for years, and after becoming an iconic figure of horror in The Ring Daveigh Chase rarely worked in the industry again and sadly died just weeks ago at the age of 35.

With Terminator 2: Judgement Day returning to cinemas worldwide later this year to mark the film’s 35th anniversary many will be watching wondering what happened to Edward Furlong who plays John Connor.

The actor was just 13 years old in the movie but gave one of the iconic modern Sci-Fi performances, and many viewers (including myself when I first watched Judgement Day as a kid) expected him to become a great of TV and Film. The reality did not quite turn out like that for Furlong.

Furlong was placed at the centre of a fight over his money, and was dropped from Terminator 3 for his drug use

The John Connor actor is a textbook case of why California has such strict laws protecting child actors after he was placed ‘at the centre of a bickering triangle of guardians’ per Entertainment Weekly. This report alleged abuse and arguments around money, placing him in an awful position.

He went on to become a cocaine addict and heroin user in his early 20s, with his cocaine use leading him to be dropped from Terminator 3 and the $15 million contract it came with, being replaced by Nick Stahl.

He continued to abuse cocaine, heroin, and meth throughout his 30s and 40s, leading him to overdose ‘a couple of times’ according to the actor.

The actor was jailed for his drug use, and has since claimed to be sober

Between 2009 and 2016 he was arrested for numerous offences, including domestic violence against a partner and eventually being arrested for being under the influence of an illicit substance. He was jailed in 2017 for one year.

In 2022 he announced that he had been sober for four years, stating that he had gotten new teeth after his had rotted due to his abuse of meth.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “It sounds weird for me to be talking about teeth because I don’t live and breathe the way I look.

“But every time I looked in the mirror, it just bummed me out as a reminder of what I had done for all those years.”

He also added regarding his fame at a young age: “I didn’t know how to manage my money. If I was older, I wouldn’t have made so many bad decisions.”
